William Tweed was once the third-largest landowner in New York City, and ran the 'Tammany' Democratic Party political operations, securing investments and patronage via his appointment to numerous boards and the the Senate. He was convicted for stealing an amount estimated even in 1877 at between $25 million and $45 million from New York City taxpayers. These boxes were created as a satirical commentary of him 'taking a bribe'.
