Lot 202

Chamberlain's Worcester dish - Millport Garrison

Chamberlain’s Worcester comport, dodecagonal top gilded with foliate scrolls on a claret ground enclosing central reserve painted with figures before a gothic building, the base with red painted inscription ‘The Garrison, Millport, August 22nd 1845, Chamberlain, Worcester’, raised on conforming foot, 27cm diameter

The Garrison, Millport was originally built in the mid 18th century by Captain Crawford of the Reserve Cutter ‘Royal George’ as a barracks for officers and crew. By the date of this dish the house was owned by the Earl of Bute, a keen buyer of Worcester porcelain, and it is likely the dish was commissioned for him.

This information is contained in a letter dated 2009, from the Curator of the Worcester Porcelain Museum, together with other paperwork which will be offered with this lot.
