THE AMERICA'S CUP SAILS IN TO CLEVEDON SALEROOMS

Founded in 1851 The America’s Cup is the oldest international competition in world.  The original silver ewer, known by its nickname ‘Auld Mug’,  was created in 1848 by the Royal jewellers Garrard & Co.  The original trophy has had a troubled history, most noticeably in 1997, when it was attacked and smashed by a sledgehammer.  Our copy has also had some damage with the handle being snapped off at some point.  This copy was made by Edmond Johnson in Dublin in 1897, and was won by J.B.Boyd, the owner of  the Colleen Class "Deidre", from the Dublin Bay Sailing Club.  The sale also includes two other silver trophies won by J.B.Boyd for his sailing endeavours.
