Clocks & Barometers 

The precise recording of time continues to fascinate, long after the search for accuracy has been achieved. For the historically important port of Bristol to flourish over many centuries, time keeping and its bedfellow, navigation have provided this region with makers of clocks, barometers and scientific instruments such as marine chronometers, all of which can be highly sought after by our database of specialist collectors.

In Spring 2025, we were delighted to consign a Le Roy & Fils carriage clock once belonging to the Countess of Mornington, Elizabeth Wellesley, Duchess of Wellington (1820-1904), with her name engraved to the brass backplate to roof handle of the case. This fantastic timepiece with amazing provenance sold for £2,200.

From the contents of Barrow Court, sold in Summer 2023, came a late 17th Century and later brass lantern clock, Thomas Veale 1689, Chew Valley. The stunning piece made a staggering £3,200. In the same year, we also sold two William & Mary marquetry longcase clocks, one of which achieved £7,000.
