17th century brass folding Gunter sector measure rule in the manner of Edmund Gunter, signed 'John Allen fecit' engraved with meridian, secant, and tangent lines, 25cm long when folded
John Allen (active 1630-42) was a mathematical instrument maker who was apprenticed to Elias Allen and became a Freeman in both the Grocers' and Clockmakers' Companies. His workshop was located on the Strand in London. Walter Hayes was apprenticed to John Allen in 1631 and freed in 1642, he is considered one of the best instrument makers of the period.
