Lot 262

Primitive School, mid 19th century - Longhorn bull in a cowshed

Primitive School, mid 19th century - Oil on canvas - Longhorn bull in a cowshed, inscribed to two labels in 19th century sepia ink verso 'Fed by Mr J. Holyoake Morton Baggott 1838', later compliments slip with typewritten note 'The Adby Ox. Fed by Mr Holyoake Morton Baggott 1838. Inscribed on reverse', further modern handwritten label states 'Whitford of Northleach. His writing on the reverse label. Prime Ox. Relined / Cleaned 1992. £5,500', 50cm x 62cm, in gilt frame

The 'Whitford of Northleach' referred to may be Richard Whitford, (c. 1821-1890), although a date of 1838 would be perhaps a few years too early.
The 'Holyoake of Morton Baggott' is likely to refer to the Holyoake family, who purchased Morton Bagot in 1640 and in the Victorian era were Needle Manufacturers (T & J Holyoake) at Redditch Mills, as well as landowners. Thomas and Joseph inherited the business from their father, also Joseph, in 1817.

Sold for £2,200
