Attributed to John Smart, (1742-1811) - George III portrait miniature on ivory, engraved to backing: 'William Augustus Gordon, 1739-1809. Captain in the Army. Served at the Siege of Louisbourgh in 1758, and on the Plains of Abraham in 1759', the figure depicted in three quarter profile wearing a red military jacket, initialled in cursive script and indistinctly dated (possibly J. S. 1774) beside one shoulder, 39mm x 31mm, in unmarked scroll surround, testing variously as 12ct to 14ct equivalent, with backing pin as brooch, 51mm x 58mm overall

"A son of Captain David Gordon of the 47th Regiment of Foot, William Augustus Gordon came to America with his father in 1750. In 1755 he became a lieutenant in the 40th Regiment of Foot, and fought at Louisbourg in 1758 and at the Plains of Abraham in 1759. Promoted to the rank of captain in 1770, he retired from the army in 1776. In 1773 he married Anna Maria Clerke and was the grandfather of General Gordon of Khartoum."
