Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) - Signed letter from 'Grand Hotel Californie, Cannes', on their headed paper, dated 29th March 1912:
'Dear Madam
I return the enclosures.
With the greatest respect for your feelings, I regret to say that I am unable to alter the play as you suggest. In any serious work of art there must be points which will wound a certain number of individuals. It is a pest, but so it is.
I will also beg you to remember that the opinions expressed by the characters are not necessarily those of the authors. If we had indulged in sneers at the Labour members would you have complained?
