Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902) - Signed photograph and letter, the former dated 1899 and signed in ink upper left, additionally inscribed verso 'May 1899 The Right Hon. Cecil J. Rhodes', 14.5cm x 9.5cm, the latter dated 19.4. [18]99 and addressed from 'Head Quarters, Egyptian Army, War Office Cairo' to Colonel William Staveley Gordon (1863-1907), as follows:
'Dear Gordon
I like your invention in a telegraph pole, and though I am aware you hate mercantile matters you must remember you have the domestic responsibilities.
If after the trial of your bases we use them and they prove a success in resisting the white ants I offer to give you a royalty per pole.
