For over thirty years, Matthew Berge was first apprentice, employee and latterly Foreman to the noted scientific instrument maker Jesse Ramsden, at 199 Piccadilly, London. Following Ramsden's death in 1800, Berge was executor to his Will, completed all the major unfinished instrument commissions, repaid the debts accrued by Ramsden, and continued trading at the premises until his death in 1819.
