Rare late 17th Century Japanese Edo period cabinet, circa 1680-1700, probably for the European (Dutch or English) export market, the twin doors decorated in red and gilt hiramaki-e lacquer with flowering plants and a kirin, flanking elaborate pierced copper escutcheon and between two sest of five copper hinges of ruyi head form decorated with chrysanthemums, all within copper-wrapped corners, enclosing ten drawers of assorted sizes, the lower corner pair lockable with further engraved lockplates, on a wavy apron, lacking side handles and with minor losses, 91cm x 49cm x 76cm high
For an admittedly superior cabinet, but nevertheless of comparable size and form with closely related arrangement of two sets of five hinges and lockable internal lower corner drawers, additionally sold with a stand, being extensively referenced and catalogued as 'for the Dutch market...
