Recently, Clevedon Salerooms welcomed selected guests to enter the whimsical world of David Carter, in an intimate private viewing at Bristol 1904 Arts ahead of our upcoming specialist sale.

Bristol 1904 Arts is a private members' club representing a vibrant community of artists and patrons, with its headquarters situated at the historic Red Lodge in Park Row. During our one-evening residency, one of 1904 Art’s large studio rooms was transformed into an incredible installation, with multiple large-scale tableaux formed of pieces that once furnished David Carter's famous micro boutique hotel, 40 Winks.

Celebrated for its theatrical, eclectic interiors, 40 Winks attracted international press attention. Clevedon Salerooms will be auctioning a selection of items from 40 Winks in our Winter Specialist Sale on 4th December.

After an expert introduction from senior valuer Chris Yeo, the evening buzzed with conversations as the guests explored the immersive displays, with each piece demonstrating another layer of Carter’s distinctive aesthetic. Carter was our guest of honour, and his attendance provided an enriching opportunity for members to discuss his design practice and the stories of his unique acquisitions. Highlights include an early 19th-century French document wallet (portefeuille) (Lot 430), a Victorian tooled tan Morocco leather despatch box (Lot 431), and a Continental carved wood and painted devil marionette (Lot 439).
Senior valuer Chris Yeo said, “The evening was certainly well attended, with a lot of enthusiastic feedback from the 40 Winks items”.
