New Year, New Horizons

New Year, New Horizons

Clevedon Salerooms held their first Interiors sale of 2026 at the the Kenn Road Auction Centre on Thursday 8th January. The 800 lot blockbuster sale had been promoted online throughout the festive period, and certainly got 2026 off to a rip-roaring start with impressive prices across the board, a 90% sold rate well ahead of expectations for an Interiors sale at Clevedon.

It’s always appealing when items with a local connection appear for sale and the auction featured six limited edition photographic prints by British photographer Garry Fabian Miller (b. 1957). The cibachrome prints were from the Sections of England series and showed the sea horizon off the coast at Clevedon. The vendor had discovered the prints roughly thirty years ago when they were being disposed of during a refit of the office premises where they had been displayed since the 1970s and, having sought the correct permissions, rescued them from a skip. This proved a smart move as the six prints sold for a combined total of over £3,000.

Gold and silver have seen a rollercoaster end to a year in which their prices are on track to record their biggest annual gains since 1979. So it was no surprise to see these wider trends have been playing out in the saleroom, with many of our top results in 2025 results having been for jewellery and gold coins. As we enter 2026, this trend shows no signs of abating with, as so often in the last twelve months, the day’s top prices being for gold. The top price of the day was for a yellow metal double curb link bracelet, the oval links with rope decoration, stamped 750, which tipped the scales at an impressive 39 grams and sold for an equally impressive £2,400. Also performing well amongst jewellery, a pearl necklace with yellow diamond clasp which sold for £980, and a fancy link yellow metal bracelet, stamped '750’ which sold for £720 and a diamond seven stone half eternity 18ct gold ring, which sold for £620.

With gold continuing its seemingly unstoppable rise, it would seem that silver is having its turn in the sun. A collection of silver flatware weighing in at  930g gross approx., sold for £1,200, whilst a George V silver teapot together with a milk jug, weighing 895g gross, sold for £1,050. Also doing well, a late Victorian silver muffin dish with the sponsor's mark of Roberts & Belk, Sheffield 1899, sold for £680 and a Victorian silver desk inkwell, the lid formed of a William IV Officer's crossbelt pouch/belt front plate, hallmarked R&S Garrard & Co (James Garrard), London 1886, sold for £620.

Healthy prices were also to be found in the watches section, where the second best price of the day was for a vintage 9ct gold bracelet watch by the Marvin Watch Company which sold for £1,750. Elsewhere there was the normal eclectic mix that make Clevedon’s Interiors sales so distinctive. Those with more contemporary tastes were well catered for as two Ercol Windsor 'Quaker' chairs, together with a table extension, sold for £380, exactly the same price as a 1970s Troika marmalade pot and vase. Finally, for anyone who had not over indulged over the festive period and was still feeling a little peckish, might have fancied a little jelly and ice cream? If they did they could have treated themselves to seven Victorian copper jelly moulds. The focus of much pre-sale interest they certainly sent the saleroom all a quiver, making short work of their estimate to to sell for £440. Clevedon Salerooms next Interiors sale will be on Thursday 29th January and will include a visit from TV’s Travelling Auctioneers. The next Fine Art sale, for which entries are now invited will be on Thursday 12th March.
